What is Gangrene?

Gangrene is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when body tissue dies due to a lack of blood supply or severe infection. It often affects the extremities—such as toes, fingers, feet, or hands—but can also occur in muscles and internal organs. Gangrene can develop rapidly and requires urgent medical attention to prevent complications, including sepsis and amputation.

Types of Gangrene

Understanding the different types of gangrene helps in early diagnosis and effective treatment:

  • Dry Gangrene – Often caused by reduced blood flow, commonly seen in people with diabetes or peripheral artery disease (PAD).

  • Wet Gangrene – Occurs due to bacterial infection in a wound; spreads rapidly and is extremely dangerous.

  • Gas Gangrene – A rare but deadly infection caused by Clostridium bacteria; requires immediate surgical intervention.

  • Internal Gangrene – Affects internal organs like the intestines or gallbladder due to blocked blood supply.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Early symptoms may be subtle but progress quickly. Be alert to:

  • Skin discoloration (blue, purple, black, or red)

  • Foul-smelling discharge from a wound

  • Severe pain followed by numbness

  • Swelling or blisters in the affected area

  • Fever and general weakness

If you notice any of these signs, seek immediate medical help.

Our Approach to Gangrene Management

Led by Dr. (Col) Pranati Swain, an expert in vascular and endovascular surgery, we offer advanced treatment for gangrene with a focus on limb salvage, infection control, and restoring circulation.

Our Treatment Protocol Includes:

Accurate Diagnosis
Advanced imaging (Doppler Ultrasound, CT Angiography, MRI) is used to determine the extent and cause of tissue death.

Restoring Blood Flow
We use minimally invasive techniques like angioplasty or bypass surgery to re-establish blood supply and save viable tissue.

Surgical Debridement
Removal of dead tissue to stop the spread of infection and promote healing.

Infection Management
Targeted antibiotic therapy and, when needed, drainage of abscesses or infected areas.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (if applicable)
In select cases, oxygen therapy may be used to promote tissue healing and fight infection.

Reconstructive Surgery & Wound Care
For patients with extensive tissue loss, skin grafts and reconstructive procedures are offered for optimal recovery.
