Aortic Aneurysm: Diagnosis & Treatment

What is an Aortic Aneurysm?

An aortic aneurysm is a potentially life-threatening condition in which a weakened area of the aorta—the body’s main blood vessel—begins to bulge or dilate. The aorta carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, and any abnormal enlargement can lead to rupture or dissection, both of which are medical emergencies.

Aneurysms can occur anywhere along the aorta but are most commonly found in two areas:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) – Occurs in the lower part of the aorta, below the kidneys
  • Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (TAA) – Occurs in the chest portion of the aorta

Why Early Detection Matters

Aortic aneurysms often develop silently—without symptoms—until they enlarge significantly or rupture. Early detection through screening and vascular check-ups is key to preventing serious complications, including:

  • Aortic rupture
  • Aortic dissection (tear in the aorta wall)
  • Internal bleeding, stroke, or sudden death

Symptoms to Watch For

Although many aortic aneurysms are asymptomatic, warning signs may include:

  • Deep, constant pain in the abdomen, back, or chest
  • A pulsating sensation in the abdomen
  • Sudden, severe pain (if rupture occurs)
  • Dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath

If you experience these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Risk Factors

You may be at higher risk if you have:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • A family history of aneurysms
  • Smoking history
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Connective tissue disorders (like Marfan syndrome)
  • Age over 60

Our Advanced Aortic Aneurysm Services

Led by Dr. (Col) Pranati Swain, a leading expert in vascular and endovascular surgery, our team provides comprehensive aortic aneurysm care, from early screening to complex surgical repair.

Our Expertise Includes:

Aneurysm Screening & Imaging
Using advanced diagnostic tools like CT Angiography, MRI, and Doppler Ultrasound to assess the size and severity of the aneurysm.

Surveillance for Small Aneurysms
For aneurysms not yet requiring surgery, we provide regular monitoring and lifestyle guidance to prevent progression.

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)
A minimally invasive procedure where a stent-graft is inserted through a small incision in the groin to reinforce the weak section of the aorta.

Open Surgical Repair
For complex or large aneurysms, we perform traditional open surgery with high precision and safety protocols.

Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)
Advanced endovascular treatment for aneurysms in the thoracic region (chest).

Why Choose Us?
