Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Diagnosis & Treatment

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a deep vein—most commonly in the legs. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, a DVT can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a potentially fatal Pulmonary Embolism (PE).

DVT is both common and preventable—and early intervention can significantly reduce risks and complications.

Symptoms of DVT

DVT may sometimes occur without noticeable symptoms. However, when present, symptoms may include:

  • Swelling in one leg (rarely both)

  • Pain or cramping, especially in the calf or thigh

  • Warmth in the affected leg

  • Red or discolored skin

  • Heaviness or aching sensation in the leg

If you notice these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Who is at Risk?

Several factors increase the risk of developing DVT, including:

  • Prolonged immobility (long flights, hospitalization, bed rest)

  • Recent surgery or injury (especially orthopedic)

  • Obesity

  • Smoking

  • Pregnancy or postpartum period

  • Family history of clotting disorders

  • Cancer or cancer treatment

  • Use of hormonal medications (birth control or HRT)

Why DVT Should Never Be Ignored

If a DVT is not treated, it can lead to:

  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE) – A clot that travels to the lungs, which can be life-threatening

  • Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) – Chronic leg pain, swelling, and skin changes

  • Recurrent DVT – Increased risk of future clots

Advanced DVT Diagnosis & Treatment

Under the expert care of Dr. (Col) Pranati Swain, a leading Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, we offer a comprehensive and personalized approach to managing Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Our DVT Services Include:

Duplex Venous Ultrasound
A non-invasive imaging test to confirm the presence, size, and location of a clot.

D-Dimer Blood Test
Used to detect elevated clotting activity in the bloodstream.

Medical Management with Anticoagulants
Medications such as blood thinners (oral or injectable) to prevent the clot from growing and new clots from forming.

Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis (CDT)
For severe DVT, this minimally invasive technique dissolves the clot directly using medication delivered via a catheter.

IVC Filter Placement
In cases where blood thinners can’t be used, a filter may be placed in the inferior vena cava to catch clots before they reach the lungs.

Compression Therapy & Long-Term Monitoring
To prevent post-thrombotic syndrome and support vein health.
